The PrimaLoft® insulation technology origin story dates back to 1983 when the US army needed a water-resistant alternative to goose down. The resulting product allowed troops to comfortably continue their active duty, even when soaking wet.
More than 40 years on and PrimaLoft® has become the industry leader in synthetic insulation thanks to its range of innovative fabrics and technologies.

What is PrimaLoft® technology?
PrimaLoft® insulations are made of ultra-fine fibres of polyester that are fused together to create a fabric. Each fibre is thinner than a human hair, which means that even when thousands of fibres are present, the resulting fabric is still incredibly soft and lightweight. Thanks to its compressible and breathable qualities, PrimaLoft® insulation is used to boost warmth and comfort in technical sportswear and accessories.

PrimaLoft boasts a range of different synthetic insulation technologies, which gives us the flexibility we need to create long-lasting sailing apparel that performs in cold and wet conditions. For ease, these are mostly grouped into colour-coded categories:
PrimaLoft® Gold Series – designed to maximise the key benefits of PrimaLoft®
PrimaLoft® Gold Active+
All of the features of the PrimaLoft® Gold Active technology such as lightweight warmth and moisture management, with the added benefit of bi-directional stretch for total freedom of movement. Its breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities make it ideal for use in high intensity sailing apparel.
PrimaLoft® Silver Series – designed to optimise the key benefits of PrimaLoft®
PrimaLoft® Silver
PrimaLoft® Silver has a different insulation grade than the Gold series but is still suitable to be worn during lots of physical activity or when in warmer climates. Its water-repellent, ultra-fine fibres deliver excellent thermal efficiency in wet conditions.
Packable without compromising on comfort features or breathability performance, PrimaLoft® Silver insulation is good for use in outer layer garments that you might take on an active day out or weekend away. The insulation is made with 100% recycled content.
PrimaLoft® Silver Utility
The PrimaLoft® Silver Utility Insulation is designed for a new level of durability making it ideal for use in garments worn for tough physical activities. Its enhanced structural integrity provides abrasion and compression resistance, while retaining warmth and air circulation in changeable conditions.
PrimaLoft® Black Series – PrimaLoft’s entry-level insulation
PrimaLoft® Black Eco
Best worn in urban environments, garments made with PrimaLoft® Black Eco insulation provide lightweight warmth and softness with water-resistance against the elements. It’s made from at least 60% post-consumer recycled materials.
There are some Musto product lines that use insulations made via alternative practices, with specialist features and materials.
PrimaLoft® Thermoplume® Cross Core
PrimaLoft® Thermoplume® is a vegan-certified advanced fibre technology that mimics the lightweight warmth, softness, and compressibility of natural down, with the water-resistant performance of the original PrimaLoft® material.
PrimaLoft® Ocean Recycled
The insulation in this range is made of post-consumer recycled materials specifically sourced from coastal areas to prevent the materials making their way into our oceans. It still boasts lightweight properties and warmth without bulk, so it performs just like other PrimaLoft® technologies even though its constructed with 100% recycled content.
PrimaLoft® RISE
PrimaLoft® RISE delivers an aesthetic alternative to natural down where the appearance of the garment always looks plumped thanks to its high lofting. PrimaLoft® RISE delivers excellent compression recovery, whilst providing best-in-class durability and resilience for long lasting performance.
