CLOTHING
General Care Information: Waterproof and GORE-TEX® trousers, jackets, down or feather filled and Polartec®.
Your Musto garments are engineered with a variety of materials and fabrics to create the best combination of freedom of movement, breathability, wind proofing, waterproofing and warmth. Each type of garment will therefore have its own requirements. We recommend that you read the care labels inside your garments carefully as this will provide specific information for your product. Below is some general guidance on how to care for your Musto products.
Cleaning
To ensure longevity and top performance, make sure you only wash your garments when they really need it.
Prior to cleaning
- remove any detachable accessories
- close all fasteners
Wash your Musto garments using a non-biological product (Our recommendation is Granger’s Performance Wash).
DO NOT USE
- biological detergent
- fabric softener
- bleaching agents
Biological detergent contains enzymes that can damage the performance and effectiveness of your product. if you were to wash a waterproof jacket with biological detergent this may affect the breathability and waterproofness of its fabric.
Do not use fabric softener, as this can also affect the breathability and moisture management of your jacket and can damage the fibres and colour fastness. Make sure you check the agents present in your current detergent as many contain fabric softeners.
Do not use bleaching agents. Check your current detergent as lots of them contain bleaching agents.
Drying
Please refer to the care label inside your garments, this will provide you with specific information on how to care for your product.
Ironing
DO NOT iron directly on prints, embroidery, badges or reflectors.
Re-proofing
We treat Musto waterproof garments, such as BR1, BR2, HPX, MPX and GORE-TEX® jackets, with a durable water repellent (DWR). This polymer prevents the garment outer from being saturated with water. Wear and tear, salt, dirt or repeated washing can wear off the DWR treatment. Your garment may even appear to be leaking because the waterlogged outer is reducing the jacket’s breathability creating condensation on the inside. When this happens or to prevent this from happening, you will need to re-treat your product.
We recommend you treat your garment only when the DWR performance begins to lower. It does not have to be after every single wash. You can test the DWR by sprinkling water on the jacket. If the water beads up and rolls off, the DWR does not need renewing. Reproofing will avoid you getting the uncomfortable wet out feeling that can rapidly put an end to your day out.
Musto recommends Granger’s Performance Repel or Clothing Wash and Repel to renew the DWR.
Please follow the instructions on the re-proofing product.
Because DWR can be activated with heat, if the care label in the garment allows, you could alternatively tumble dry your clean garment for 20 minutes on a low heat to reactivate the DWR treatment on the outer fabric.
Another option is to place a towel over your garment and iron it, without steam, on a low heat. But please check the garment care label first.
If it’s a down/feather filled garment please use their Down Wash.
Storage
Store your garment once you are sure it is perfectly dry. It might be worth letting it dry naturally for one more day to ensure all moisture has left the garment, especially when storing your product at the end of the season.
Down jackets need to be stored in a dry, aeriated place with room to breathe.
FOOTWEAR
For the best care for your shoes, we favour Granger’s Products, though there are many good products on the market. Please read the care label on your footwear as this will provide you with specific information on how to care for your product.
Cleaning
Prior to cleaning, remove any loose dirt, sand or dust. Remove shoe laces.
Clean your shoe using a damp, soft sponge or cloth. If the shoe is suede, use a dry brush instead. You can loosen stubborn stains on suede with steam from an iron or kettle.
If water alone does not work and you feel like you need to use soap, use special footwear cleaner. Our favourite is Granger’s Footwear Cleaner for use on leather, suede and synthetic shoes.
Drying
Let the shoe dry naturally before use. Tip: if the inside of your shoe is wet from your sailing session or outdoor activity, stuff your shoes with newspaper to help the drying process. The newspaper will absorb the majority of the moisture.
Do not expose your shoes to direct heat sources such as the sun, radiator, stove, or open fire. If you leave your shoes outside, leave them in the shade.
Proofing
Musto footwear is treated with a durable water repellent (DWR): a polymer that prevents the garment from being saturated with water. Over time, wear and tear, salt, dirt, and water can wear off the water repellence of your footwear. It is important to protect and reproof your shoes and boots to ensure they keep their performance. Our favourite proofer is Granger’s Footwear Proofer, but there are many other good products on the market.
Before applying any proofer, make sure your shoe is clean (see step 1 below).
Spray the proofer product directly on to the shoe at the distance instructed on the proofer.
Remove any excess product with a clean, dry cloth.
Storage
Do not store your shoes or boots in direct sunlight or by direct het sources such as a radiator.
